Wirehaired Vizsla

Wirehaired Vizsla

Introduction

The Wirehaired Vizsla, also known as the Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, the Wirehaired Hungarian Vizsla, the Hungarian Wirehaired Pointing Dog, the Drotzoru Magyar Vizsla or simply the WHV, is an energetic sporting dog prized by hunters for its intelligence, stamina, instinctive pointing, and retrieving skills. The breed gets its name from its dense wiry coat, which provides protection in inclement weather. The Wirehaired Vizsla’s water-resistant coat also allows it to perform icy water retrievals. This is a natural gundog with an excellent nose and a tractable, highly trainable temperament. Wirehaired Vizslas are energetic animals that require regular exercise to maintain their emotional and physical fitness. Developed in the 1930s from selective crossings of purebred smooth coated Vizslas and German Wirehaired Pointers, this intelligent, affectionate, sensitive dog makes a fine hunting partner and trustworthy family companion.

The Wirehaired Vizsla was accepted into the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service registry in 2008. It was approved to compete in all AKC Companion events (obedience, rally, agility) and Performance trials (hunting, tracking, field ) effective January 1, 2009, and it became eligible to compete in AKC conformation shows as a Sporting breed in the Miscellaneous Class in January of 2011.

Wirehaired Vizslas (WHVs) are medium-sized sporting dogs that resemble a blending of their Vizsla and German Wirehaired Pointer ancestors.
