Manchester Terrier - Appearance & Grooming

Manchester Terrier Manchest terrier dog breed

Appearance

Manchester Terriers are small, slender, jet black dogs with distinctive mahogany markings on the muzzle, above the eyes, on the legs and on the belly. Their elegant, arched backs and narrow, pointed muzzles reflect their Whippet ancestors. Their facial expression is keen, bright and intelligent. Manchester Terriers have small, V-shaped ears, tight, well-arched feet and powerful hindquarters for their small stature. At first glance, they resemble small Doberman Pinschers, but actually they are an improved, more elegant version of the coarser, heavier old Black and Tan Terrier.

Size and Weight

The Manchester Terrier comes in two varieties: Toy and Standard. The Toy weighs less than 12 pounds and typically is between 10 and 12 inches tall, measured at the withers. The Standard Manchester Terrier weighs from 12 pounds up to but not exceeding 22 pounds and stands 15 to 16 inches in height, measured at the same place. The American Kennel Club considers these to be separate breeds; the Toy Manchester is a member of the Toy Group, while the Standard belongs to the AKC’s Terrier Group.

Coat and Color

The Manchester Terrier has a glossy black coat with rich mahogany markings on the muzzle, face, ears, belly and legs. Its coat is short, smooth and dense.

Grooming

Manchester Terries are low-maintenance dogs. Their short coats can be kept in great shape with an occasional brushing or wipe-down with a damp cloth. They are not heavy shedders. As with many other small breeds, special attention should be paid to the Manchester’s teeth. Regular brushing at home, and routine veterinary dental cleanings, should be part of this breed’s grooming regimen.
